Our expertise of assisting in these circumstances, which are often also very high-profile, means that we understand the need to deliver strategic advice which is clear, pragmatic and commercial.
Our team also has significant experience of dealing with class actions and other forms of group litigation and is well-versed in the various innovative funding arrangements that can be used to suit a particular client’s needs.
We work hard to protect our clients’ interests against the leading London and international law firms that are frequently instructed by banks and other litigants with deep pockets. We understand well the many collateral problems and claims that can arise from these sorts of disputes.
Examples of the type of work we undertake
We have specialist experience of pursuing financial services and professional negligence claims. We also have expertise in dealing with matters involving tax, challenging the decisions of a range of different public bodies by way of judicial review, and in working with clients on competition damages actions.
Claim against a major bank valued at over £50m – Acting against a major bank in a high-profile claim valued at over £50m. The claim included allegations of wrongful interference, shadow directorship and economic duress by the bank. This extremely complex claim raised issues that are very current in relation to lender interference and alleged oppressive conduct during the credit crunch and since.
Defending claims in relation to an alleged £1bn fraud – Defending claims brought against a company officer in relation to an alleged £1bn per annum fraud. The claim raised a number of highly technical legal issues in relation to established commercial banking practice and the conduct and internal governance of the claimant bank.
Dispute arising from a joint venture – Acting for a wealthy individual in claims arising from a joint venture agreement which saw investments of c. £10m, involving multiple jurisdictions and potential claims for breach of trust, professional negligence and fraud.
Mis-selling of interest rate hedging products – Acting for a car dealership group against a major bank in a claim relating to the alleged mis-sale of interest rate hedging products founded on misrepresentation by the bank.
Advising clients in dispute with HMRC and/or other public bodies – In tax matters this includes proceedings before the tax tribunals and higher courts. Our team’s experience covers both direct and indirect taxation and includes experience of judicial review proceedings taken to the appeal courts.
