SKA Developments has been given the green light as construction work is set to start on the redevelopment of the iconic Co-op building in Huddersfield, the first project within Kirklees Council's £250m regeneration plan for the town centre.
SKA Developments' scheme includes the addition of a three-storey extension to the existing building to create a total of 135 student bedrooms in 75 apartments.
It follows an announcement in June by the council for the rejuvenation of Huddersfield town centre, after they agreed to provide a loan to SKA Developments to bring the long-derelict listed building back into use.
"This exciting deal for SKA Developments and Kirklees Council will not only revive a disused building that hasn’t been used for 20 years but will now transform the site into a rejuvenated area. It will help to create a vibrant Huddersfield town centre for workers, residents and visitors alike.” (Basharat Ali, Partner, Schofield Sweeney)
