Schofield Sweeney were delighted to sponsor the 2016 Bradford Lord Mayor’s Appeal Dragon Boat Festival, on Saturday 7th May in Saltaire’s Roberts Park.
A great day has had by the team from Schofield Sweeney, “Arms of Fury”.
The team was drawn from all 3 offices and captained by Chris Schofield.
There were 45 teams taking part and races were between 3 teams over a 175 yard stretch of the River Aire. Whilst never winning a heat “Arms of Fury” shaved 9 seconds off their time over the 3 races, going from 1.11.94 to 1.05 to 1.02.20. We came close to a capsize on the second heat but good luck and management by the helmsman averted disaster.
The weather was brilliantly sunny which attracted large crowds to the river bank and the park where there were a variety of food stalls, an excellent Polish beer bar, which kept the crew hydrated on a hot day, and several live bands.
The Lord Mayor's Appeal is raising funds for two local charities in 2016:
Bradford Hospitals Childrens Charity
The charity is hoping to raise money for a variety of equipment. On their wish list is a sensory room, multi-use gym for those children with cystic fibrosis and innovative distraction toys and games as well as beds for parents who are able to stay with their children and help with their care.
Spread a Smile
Spread a Smile offers small grants for charitable organisations and smaller voluntary groups across the district to enhance their projects without having to spend extra time raising money.
The festival is shaping up to be a brilliant day out for the family, with stalls, live music, rides and children's activities, not to mention the Dragon Boat race itself.
