Managing Staff Effectively in Schools

16th May 2019

The education sector is undergoing a huge amount of change and, in uncertain times, schools and academies need to manage staff effectively and deal with those that cause problems.

Misconduct, poor performance and high levels of sickness absence all have a detrimental impact on colleagues and pupils but dismissing staff can be a daunting prospect. With the maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal now £83,682, and with unlimited awards for discrimination claims, the consequences of not managing dismissals effectively can be significant. However, it can be equally costly to do nothing.
This seminar will deal with the best way to manage the dismissal process through expert legal advice and the use of practical examples and case studies. We will help you to:

  • Minimise the risks of a successful tribunal claim
  • Follow fair procedures and comply with the ACAS Code of Practice
  • Dismiss fairly for misconduct, poor performance and sickness absence
  • Conduct a reasonable investigation
  • Deal with child protection and safeguarding issues
  • Address intermittent and long-term sickness absence problems
  • Deal with disability discrimination issues
  • Undergo fair restructuring and redundancy procedures
  • Deal with trade union sensitivities and staff consultation
  • Use protected conversations and settlement agreements effectively
