On Saturday a crew of 14(ish) Schofield Sweeney reps – known as “Water Schoeys Doing Here?” - competed in the Leeds Dock Dragon Boat Race, raising money for our chosen charity TCV – The Conservation Volunteers.
On the hottest day of the year, battling sunburn and bruising, our intrepid team comprising Alex Aitken, Sadia Ali, Adrian Ballam, Becky Beech, Olly Brooke, Abigail Falshaw, Lizzie Foster, Sally Ann Masih, David Strachan, Manjit Virdee (and a few friends and family) competed in three knucklebiting races against teams much better than them. Chris Schofield also competed in the first race and gave some helpful tips for the team to up their game before jumping ship (pun intended).
Sadly, it was not enough. After what the team had thought was a better second run, with more synchronised and less stressful rowing, Water Schoey’s Doing Here? had managed to add six seconds to their time. The third race was a struggle, especially as some of the team had been replenishing themselves with JD and coke, but a more spirited and lively row, led by Becky Beech on the drums, meant a personal best for the team, despite finishing at the bottom of the leader board and a good dragon-boat’s length behind the opposition.
A great day was had by all despite these three crushing defeats, and none of the team has so far complained of Viles disease from swallowing canal water.
