A HR day from hell

Our next seminar, delivered by our specialist employment law team will be based on a ‘HR day from hell’ scenario that business managers and HR professionals may face.

With help from delegates, we will advise Sam, a Senior Manager, on three emails in his inbox which he is required to face during his working day. We’ll cover the twists and turns of each issue as it develops, advising on how best to approach the matter.

We’ll cover:

• How to conduct a disciplinary process, including the investigation and disciplinary hearing
• Appropriate disciplinary sanctions
• How to conduct a thorough grievance process and the various permutations
• Managing underperformance and the relationship with medical capability

This will be a fun, thought provoking, and interactive seminar where you can discuss your own ‘HR day from hell’ issues with our team and other HR professionals.

The scenario

Sam is a Senior Manager at an organisation employing more than 200 employees, but with no HR function, any issues that arise in relation to HR come to Sam. After a nice relaxing weekend, Sam’s inbox contains the following emails:

An incident has come to light today which concerns Boris Thompson, Production Manager. There is an allegation that he placed a camera in the ladies’ toilet and covertly recorded inappropriate material. The camera was found by Josie Tucker, and she immediately showed the camera to Richard Henderson who identified it as a “spy camera”.  Following discussion between Tracey and myself, Alan was sent home. What do you suggest are next steps?

I am not sure if you are aware, but last year Harry and I had a brief relationship.  I called it off after a couple of months and Harry was not happy. He has since been stalking me and I contacted the Police over the weekend. I want to put a grievance in against Harry due to his behaviour and I cannot work with him anymore.

I am at my witts end with Audrey. She is not performing to the level that we need. I held her 3rd probationary review meeting today and I told her that she wasn’t where we needed her to be. She said that Lucy who line manages her has been bullying her and this has triggered her anxiety and depression which is impacting on her concentration. She’s full of excuses. I have extended her probation for another 3 months, but I don’t think I can put up with this any longer. Can you prepare me a letter to dismiss her please.
